Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is not a stranger to the wonderful world of Twitter (X, whatever). He is not afraid to get on the platform for the occasional article post, or subtle jab to make a point. Amongst his recent activity, Coach Kiffin retweeted a post from the Barstool Ole Miss account.
The original post centered around the most recent release of the most recent AP Top 25 Poll, in which Ole Miss is currently sitting at No. 15. The caption on the quote tweet read, “Why play the games?”
There are a couple of ways to interpret this reaction. The most likely case is the fact that Ole Miss is ranked behind South Carolina, which comes in at No. 13. If that is the case, it is understandable to a degree. The Rebels defeated the Gamecocks 27-3 a few weeks ago, and head-to-head matchups should obviously matter most. There’s some legitimacy to that distaste.
Both teams also each currently hold a 9-3 overall record, so it’s not like there is a record difference between the two either. Each program has three wins against teams currently ranked inside of the Top 25 as well, so there is no separation in that area as well.
At the end of the day, it feels like two teams on the bubble that have nobody to blame but themselves. Ole Miss has three losses against unranked teams, so what claim do they really have to being in the College Football Playoffs right now? Absolute chaos down the stretch is the only thing that can give them a chance in that regard.
After all that Ole Miss paid for this past portal class, and the talent that was returning, this has been an extremely disappointing year under Coach Kiffin. Losing to one of Florida, Kentucky, or LSU is forgivable but all three are hard to stomach. That loss to Kentucky is especially rough, considering they ended the year 4-8, and you hosted them.
