Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel gave senior wide receiver Bru McCoy one heck of a compliment on Saturday after UT's 56-0 win against UTEP.
McCoy, who was likely playing in his final game in Neyland Stadium (unless the Vols end up hosting a College Football Playoff game in December), had a solid day against UTEP, catching four passes for 37 yards and two touchdowns.
The two receiving touchdowns were McCoy's first touchdowns of the 2024 season.
After the game, Heupel was asked how McCoy, who transferred from USC to Tennessee before the 2022 season, has handled a year in which the wide receiver hasn't posted huge stats.
"It was great to see him get those opportunities, take advantage of it, but, man, special to see him finish it out that way today on senior day," said Heupel. "He’s meant so much to us and this program and to me."
“Bru's one of the greatest team guys I’ve ever been around," added Heupel. "[He] will do anything for anyone. Will play without the ball in his hands as hard as anybody I’ve been around. Takes great pride in that. There’s been some opportunities and we just hadn’t connected on it. And you watch him after one of those plays, he resets to the next play as well as anybody. Today was cool just to see him connect and and go finish on a couple of big plays. Really excited for him and his family.”
It's clear that McCoy has meant a lot to Heupel and the Tennessee football program. The California native is a big reason why the Vols have built an elite culture in Knoxville the last couple of years. And regardless of how this season ends for Tennessee, McCoy will go down as an all-time great Vol — not just because of the big plays, but also because of the kind of teammate he's been at UT for the last three seasons.
