In Week 13 the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Las Vegas Raiders in the NFL's second ever Black Friday game.
The Raiders are limping into town with a 2-9 record and losers of their last seven games. On top of that, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reported that current starting quarterback Gardner Minshew broke his collarbone during the Raiders' Week 12 loss to the Denver Broncos, and will miss the rest of the season.
Minshew began the season as Las Vegas' starter before being benched in Week 6 for backup Aidan O'Connell. Unfortunately for O'Connell, he broke his thumb on his throwing hand during his second start, forcing the Raiders to go back to Minshew. The Chiefs beat Minshew and the Raiders 27-20 in Week 8.
As Tafur reported, it appears that O'Connell is recovered and ready to go. The Raiders will have to decide between him or Desmond Ridder – who they signed off of the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad after O'Connell broke his thumb – as to who will get the start against K.C. on Friday.
Ridder was a third-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2022 whose career has never taken off. O'Connell was drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round in 2023 and went 5-5 for in 10 starts as a rookie. One of those victories came against the Chiefs on Christmas Day.
This season, O'Connell lost his only start in which he played the full game. Regardless of whether K.C. faces him or Ridder, it better not take either of them, or the Raiders as a whole, lightly. Las Vegas not only upset the Chiefs last year, it gave them some fits in their earlier matchup this season, as did the 3-8 Carolina Panthers this past week.
