As the San Francisco 49ers prepared to face the Chicago Bears in Week 14, general manager John Lynch was forced to address talk of the Niners trading head coach Kyle Shanahan to the Bears.
After the 49ers blew out the Bears 38-13 on Sunday, Shanahan joined Lynch in emphatically dismissing such an idea.
On Tuesday, ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio floated the idea that the Bears should explore trading for Shanahan. Two days later, Lynch labeled the suggestion of the 49ers potentially trading a coach that has led them to two Super Bowl appearances as "rather comical".
That led to push back from Florio, who pointed out that Lynch was hired after Shanahan in 2017 and, as such, ownership would likely have the final say in such a scenario.
But 49ers owner Jed York is unlikely to be motivated to move on from Shanahan and, when asked about the trade talk in his postgame press conference, Shanahan swiftly dismissed the notion he would push for such a move.
"I don’t want to be any place in the world more than here," said Shanahan.
"My family feels just as strong, if not a lot stronger. There's no way I'm making that decision."
Externally, it might feel like Shanahan and the 49ers could benefit from a fresh start. The reality, though, is that Shanahan is not keen for a clean break and move to a new team. While the Bears would obviously love to have a coach of his caliber, the 49ers' emphatic win over Chicago emphatically illustrated why, beyond factors impacting his family, there is no interest on Shanahan's part in a move to a significantly inferior team.
Underwhelming seasons like the 2024 campaign endured by the 49ers regularly create rumors about the future direction of travel for teams. With Shanahan's comments, there shouldn't be a lot of mileage left in this utterly bizarre piece of speculation.
