Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided an optimistic update on WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown ahead of practice on Wednesday.
Brown is currently on injured reserve after his sternoclavicular joint injury didn't heal properly and required surgery. At the time of his placement on injured reserve, there was some optimism that he might be able to return and play in the postseason, but it wasn't a given due to the rare nature of the injury he was dealing with.
Asked whether he had a finite timeline for Brown and whether there was a chance he was back this year, Reid told reporters he couldn't know for certain. In the same breath, he suggested that Brown could be ahead of schedule.
"Yeah, he's doing great," Reid said of Brown. "That I can tell you, he's doing great.(He) seems to be on schedule, or a little bit ahead of schedule. So I can't tell you (if he'll be back this year). I mean, I don't know that. It's going to be a while, though. But he's, he's a relentless worker, I can tell you that much, and I can tell you he's doing very well for what he's got there."
Brown can play X, Z, and Zebra (slot) in the Chiefs' offense, but was expected to be used in a field-stretching role like the one currently occupied by rookie WR Xavier Worthy. Adding Brown to the mix for the playoffs could help the offense reach new heights, or at least the heights that were in part expected ahead of Brown's injury. Consider that he'll also be reunited with new Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins, who he played with on the Arizona Cardinals in 2022.
The 27-year-old Brown was spotted at the Chiefs' training facility on Wednesday by The Athletic's Nate Taylor, along with WR Rashee Rice, who are both on injured reserve with their respective ailments.
Brown, of course, signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs for the 2024 NFL season. If he's unable to return for the postseason, there's simply no telling if he'll be back with Kansas City in the future.
