When the Buffalo Bills released Marquez Valdes-Scantling, many wondered if he would return to the Kansas City Chiefs, whose wide receiver corps has been devasted by injuries.

That potential reunion is now off of the table as Valdes-Scantling has signed with the New Orleans Saints, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that multiple teams expressed interest in signing Valdes-Scantling, but didn't specify if the Chiefs were one of them.

The Saints, like the Chiefs, have also been hit hard by injuries within their receiving corps. Valdes-Scantling makes sense for the Saints as they needed a speedster who can stretch the field after losing Rashid Shaheed. Kansas City already has that in rookie Xavier Worthy.

It was natural to wonder if the Chiefs would bring back Valdes-Scantling after running back Kareem Hunt and receiver JuJu-Smith Schuster recently made their returns to the team. Signing Valdes-Scantling would have saved K.C. from having to make a trade and give up assets, which is still very much in play

Valdes-Scantling's spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Chiefs, and it was a ride of highs and lows. He made some clutch catches during big games, such as the game-sealing reception in last year's AFC Championship game, as well as a touchdown in Super Bowl LVIII.

However, he also was a non-factor in several games, and dropped several passes that proved to be back-breaking. The polarizing seven-year veteran spent his first four NFL season with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Chiefs. He caught 63 passes for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns during his two years in K.C.

After signing with the Buffalo Bills during the offseason, he was quickly buried on the depth chart and ended up recording just two receptions for 26 yards in six games before being released last week.
