The New Orleans Saints got banged up once again in Week 4. The division matchup saw Tyrann Mathieu and Taysom Hill both leave without returning. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. also suffered an injury that kept him from re-joining his team on the field.
On Monday, Gay, himself, updated his own status after head coach Dennis Allen did not provide any injury updates during his time with the media.
Willie Gay Jr. posts injury update on social media
The new Saints linebacker seemingly had surgery after Sunday's game against the Falcons. He's in a sling in his latest post to his Instagram story.
The timeline for Gay's return is unknown. We will probably get updates on him alter in the week.
Demario Davis' return just became more important
The top Saints linebacker missed Week 4 due to injury. It was his first missed game of his career due to injury.
Dennis Allen sounded hopeful about his long-term status last week, but there's still plenty of unknown as to when he will return. With the Gay injury, Davis' return to action needs to be sooner than later for New Orleans – as long as he is healthy.
D'Marco Jackson came in for Gay versus Atlanta. The linebacker play was noticeably worse without Davis or Gay on the field for New Orleans.
Not to mention, Davis is the unquestioned leader of the unit. He wears the green dot and gets the Saints settled when they need to make adjustments.
If he misses more time, alongside Tyrann Mathieu who is dealing with multiple ailments, that could be a code red sort of situation for the Saints defense.
Key depth players would need to step up along multiple levels of their defensive unit. That's a lot to ask.
Regardless, keep an eye out for status updates on Gay and Davis. Both have been great pieces to the puzzle early in the season for the black and gold.
