Last week Michigan received some potential great news in regards to (finally) fixing their quarterback problem. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, a Michigan alum, went viral last week after his comments on potentially buying a quarterback every off-season for the Wolverines.

The famous media mogul mentioned on the Barstool Pick Em show that he would drop $1 million, $2 million, or even $3 million each year in funds to directly assist Michigan in procuring a top QB talent every recruiting cycle (as you can see in his post below).

There were immediately questions from fans and media as to the sincerity of his comments. Would he really drop that kind of cash just to get his school a quarterback every year? There had been wild speculation before that this kind of angel donor contribution could possibly happen, but this type of explicit and specific NIL donation hadn't come to fruition before.

As of Thursday this week, Portnoy had officially confirmed talks that he had talked with Sherrone Moore and Michigan on this potential connection really taking place. And he did specify that he is not interested in going through some big external NIL fund, group, or other individuals to get this donation done.

"It's a lot of money to kind of just throw out the window, but I'm willing to do it. I do not want to talk to other people. I don't want to–I am not trying to get in the middle of NIL. I do not want people I don't know calling me. I don't want to talk to this guy. I don't want emails from that guy. I don't want any of that…No I don't want to talk to any of you. I talked to Sherrone [Moore]. I talked to him. I have his number we talked. He told me the one I've got to talk to. I've not talked to that person. I will. And then we'll see."

It's clear that Portnoy doesn't want to jump through any hoops. He doesn't want to deal with any of the nonsense. He simply wants to talk with the coaching staff and the one guy he needs to in order to get this done. He still didn't promise that he was locked in to making a huge donation, but it sounds like he's really considering making this happen for Michigan.

Obviously it's too late to fix the complete incompetent set of quarterbacks that Michigan is stuck with this year in Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and a handful of others who are somehow worse than those two options. However, if the Wolverines can fix their QB situation every off-season with just one NIL donor–essentially securing a top five QB every year–that's a massive game-changer for the program moving forward.
