The New Orleans Saints made some notable roster decisions on Monday afternoon. They're preparing themselves for a Monday night clash with the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.
Saints sign OL Kyle Hergel to active roster
New Orleans also elevated safety Johnathan Abram and linebacker Isaiah Stalbird from the practice squad for depth on defense and special teams.
Shane Lemieux was placed on injured reserve, according to Nick Underhill.
The elevations make a ton of sense. New Orleans will get Demario Davis back at linebacker, but Pete Werner and Willie Gay Jr. are both out for MNF. Werner suffered an injury in practice on Saturday.
Running back Kendre Miller was also ruled out for Week 5 against Chiefs.
As for Hergel, he was a preseason standout for the Saints. After a strong rookie minicamp, he continued to build on that in exhibition play. I actually expected him to open the season on the 53-man roster, but New Orleans chose a different route.
Hergel gets rewarded after impressive preseason
The undrafted rookie could get snaps versus KC if any of the interior players for the Saints struggle in the first half. That's certainly possible against one of the top defensive linemen in football in Chris Jones for the Chiefs.
New Orleans will probably opt to start veteran Connor McGovern at center after adding him late this week.
Erik McCoy is on injured reserve, and Lemieux was a depth option behind him. Lucas Patrick, listed as questionable, will probably start at guard if he's able to suit up for the Saints.
Tyrann Mathieu sends strong social media statements that both Saints and Chiefs fans will appreciate
He’s ready to prove himself again.
