"You will not regret this."
That is what Kareem Hunt told Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid when he returned to the team, according to the ESPN Monday Night Football broadcast.
And he wasn't kidding.
In his first game back at Arrowhead Stadium, the running back put the Chiefs on the board first, scoring a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
On that opening drive, he had a total of five carries for 23 yards.
Hunt was given a second chance with the Chiefs after being signed to Kansas City's practice squad in September. The plan was always for him to eventually be promoted to the 53-man roster, joining Carson Steele and Samaje Perine after losing RB Isiah Pacheco.
Hunt's first stint with the Chiefs was filled with controversy. He assaulted a woman, got caught on film doing so, and lied to the team about the situation. It eventually led to his release from Kansas City, despite a tremendous on-field start to his NFL career.
Hunt was suspended for eight games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The now 29-year-old running back has since taken responsibility for his actions, admitting he was wrong.
The running back got his second chance in the NFL with the Browns. He didn't fumble that opportunity away, playing with them for the past five seasons. He did have one notable hiccup, a 2020 traffic violation where he was caught speeding with small amounts of marijuana in his backpack in Cleveland.
But as for returning to Kansas City, he didn't think this was going to ever happen.
"Honestly, no, I didn't think I'd end up back here," Hunt told reporters, bluntly. "But you know, it's crazy how some things happen to work out."
"It was a lot, honestly, it was a lot of emotions," Hunt added about rejoining the team. "I was very excited, a little nervous, and stuff like that. So I just, I said, 'These guys know me. I just got to go and be myself.'"
Hunt made his 2024 debut against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, finishing the game with 14 carries for 69 yards.
