Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt showed fans love in the best possible way during Week 5's 26-13 win over the New Orleans Saints.
It was Hunt's first game back at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium since rejoining the Chiefs this season. He kicked off the game by earning his first start with Kansas City since Week 11 of the 2018 NFL season. That's 2,149 days ago, for anyone keeping count. It sure felt like fans got the vintage version of Hunt in the game, too.
The 29-year-old running back notched 28 touches for 117 total yards and a touchdown against the Saints in Week 5. It was a lot like his stat line in Week 11 of 2018 when he had 17 touches for 111 total yards and a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in an instant classic game. Week 5 against the Saints was the first time since the 2020 NFL season that he recorded over 100 total yards in a single game.
As for his five-yard rushing touchdown, Hunt relished the opportunity to get back into the endzone for the team that drafted him. After the play he celebrated by showing fans how much he appreciates the support in his return to the Chiefs Kingdom.
"It's a great feeling to get back in the end zone," Hunt said. "I missed it very much. That's why I threw up a heart, you know, to show my love for Kansas City."
The replay didn't show the celebration. However, photographers captured it. It's a simple gesture, but one that will certainly resonate with fans who were reluctant to give him a chance.
Hunt is getting a taste of the success he missed out on when he was released by Kansas City back in 2018. He's taking full advantage of the opportunity that he has to go out there and put a win on the board for the Chiefs.
"I'm having a blast out there," Hunt said. "It's so much fun. I missed it so much. Coach Reid does a great job of putting us in great situations to be successful."
