The Georgia Bulldogs could be without one of their key wide receivers, London Humphreys, when they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa this Saturday.
According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, Humphreys is fighting mono and is expected to miss Week 5's matchup.
When asked on Wednesday about Humphreys' game status against Bama, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart offered very little.
"Yeah, we'll see when the reports come out," Smart on the weekly SEC call. "We still don't have a lot of verification on some things. That's what we do the injury reports for."
Georgia's injury report will be released on Wednesday night which will have more clarity.
Humphreys, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound transfer from Vanderbilt, made a big impact in Week 1's win over Clemson where he logged two catches for 63 yards on the season so far.
While Humphreys has not been targeted since then, he has still seen action in Georgia's last two games, including making his first start for the Dawgs vs. Kentucky.
Before coming to Athens, Humphreys hauled in 22 catches for 439 yards and four touchdowns for the Commodores in 2023.
If Humphreys is unavailable, Georgia still has plenty of targets for quarterback Carson Beck, including Dillon Bell, Dominic Lovett, Arian Smith, and Colbie Young, who are all in front of him.
However, with there being no real "star power" (as Kirby Smart would say) in the wide receiver room, it's certainly beneficial for the Dawgs to have everyone available for a matchup like this one against the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide.
"I mean, I wouldn't say there's the star power," Smart said this week. "Brock Bowers is not playing, you know? That's pretty obvious. A second-round pick and a first-round pick are no longer in those roles. I don't know that we have the depth because everybody we had now we had last year, and they played a different role last year. All the guys now, their roles have been elevated. We've got a lot of guys that can play moving parts. We had some additions, Colbie and London and some young guys come along — Ben. But it's a different group.
"You're a different team every year, you know? We lost something when we lost Darnell. We lost something when we lost Jordan and Devonte. You replace that and you try to make up for it in every area you can. You've got the players you got and the ones we got I'm very pleased with. I'm happy with the guys we got. We got to do a good job executing with the ones we have."
Without Humphreys, Georgia could end up turning to Cole Speer, Anthony Evans, Sacovie White or Michael Jackson on the back end of the depth chart.
