The Miami Hurricanes found out where they're starting from as they continue their chase for their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance and their sixth national title in program history.
The selection committee released their initial playoff rankings on Tuesday night, and the Canes checked in at #4 in the rankings and the #3 seed.
The difference between the Canes' ranking and their seeding is that Ohio State moved from the #2 ranking to the #5 seed behind Miami, Georgia, and BYU. That's because the top four seeds consist only of conference winners, and Oregon is the current projected Big Ten champion. That puts Miami on the 3 seed line, awaiting the winner of the projected Alabama-Texas first round matchup.
What the committee revealed about its first rankings is that a projected ACC champion Miami sits third among the conference winners. Of course, Miami was going to slot behind the Big Ten and SEC winners, but an undefeated BYU with impressive wins over SMU and Kansas State could have bumped the Canes down to the last spot among conference champions and in the unenviable position of having to face the 5 seed. Fortunately for the Canes, that's not the case, at least at this point.
There's still plenty of time for things to change. A whole month of football remains until the final rankings are revealed on December 8. At this point, the Canes have to like how things look in the initial rankings. However, they have to do their part and continue going 1-0 each Saturday.
