In a couple of days, we will see two of the very best defensive players in the NFL going at it on Thursday night. When the Cleveland Browns host the Pittsburgh Steelers, we will have two offenses working about monster pass rushers on the other side of the football.
Myles Garrett is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and Watt has the same award on his resume. However, Watt was not too happy that he didn’t win it last season, when he believed he was deserving of it.
Watt was at the NFL Honors originally, then left the ceremony once he found out that he was not being named the Defensive Player of the Year. After that, Watt went to X (Twitter) and said, “Nothing I’m not used to”.
On Tuesday, Browns’ Garrett was asked about how he feels regarding Watt’s response to that. Thursday night is the first time that the Steelers and Browns will have matched up this season.
“I’ve never complained about the trophy not being in my house and vice versa, he shouldn’t be feeling two ways about it going to me,” Garrett said. “We’re just gonna play the game. I don’t play against T.J. He doesn’t play against me. We’re playing to do what we’re supposed to, go out and do what we’re supposed to, win the game, and dominate on defense.”
Garrett took the approach you would expect. He has never been much of a trash-talker and rather let his game do the talking. So far this season, Garrett has seven sacks in 10 games played. Garrett had 14 sacks last year and 16 each of the two previous years. As of right now, Garrett is on track to finish with about 12 sacks, which would be his lowest since 2020.
Watt has 7.5 sacks so far this season and put up 19 of them last year. As always, Watt is a monster of a player that the Browns have to worry heavily about. Both Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr. will have their hands full with the All-Pro.
Expect this to be the last of the talk around last year’s DPOY award, as there will be recent results to talk about after Thursday’s game.
