On Saturday Smith was fined $11,255 for unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting) during the Seahawks' loss to the Buffalo Bills last week. Things didn't get any better on Sunday as Smith threw three interceptions during a 26-20 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
To add insult to injury, Smith's final interception thrown on the day went for a 103-yard touchdown return by Rams safety Kamren Kinchens. That is good for the longest played recorded in the NFL so far in the 2024 season. It is also the longest interception return in the Rams' 88-year history as a franchise.
Smith was backpedaling as threw the ball and appeared to not see Kinchens in the vicinity. Sunday's game was a dogfight between Seattle and Los Angeles, coming down to walk-off touchdown pass from Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to receiver Demarcus Robinson. Smith completed 21 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns on the day. Jackson Smith-Njigba was his main target, hooking up with the second-year receiver seven times for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Seattle has now dropped to last place in the NFC West with a 4-5 record. Coach Mike Macdonald made a questionable decision to try to convert on fourth-and-one from the Rams' 16-yard line instead of kicking the potential go-ahead field goal. Running back Kenneth Walker was stuff on a rushing attempt, which led to L.A.'s winning touchdown drive.
As for Smith, he'll look to regroup after struggling during the last month, throwing six interceptions over his past four games. The Seahawks are entering their much needed bye week, needing to fix their offensive woes and get healthy.
