For a while Texas A&M controlled their own destiny. They were playing really good football, and just needed to keep winning football games. Unfortunately, South Carolina changed the formula a bit when they upset the Aggies, and now what happens around them will be very important.

Texas A&M must first do one thing, take care of business and end the season on a strong note. That includes this weekend against a very underwhelming New Mexico State team. After that, keep your eyes open and hope for these few things.

(7) Tennessee at (12) Georgia

This game should have the Aggies’ attention for a variety of reasons. They are both SEC schools, which means they will figure into a spot for the SEC Championship, and an automatic quality. If the season ended today, Texas A&M would be facing off against Tennessee. If the Volunteers win, then they will all but cement themselves with a spot barring a late season upset. Both sides have their merit for wanting them to lose, but the Aggies should be rooting for Georgia to lose. Another loss moves Tennessee up, and also eliminates the Bulldogs from playoff contention. Even with their struggles, no team wants to see Georgia in the playoffs.

(3) Texas at Arkansas

Wait, Texas A&M should want Texas to win? But aren’t they ranked in front of them? This rooting interest is projected forward a good bit. In a couple of weeks, the Aggies are going to take on the Longhorns and that game could be a huge decider for whether Texas A&M is able to make the playoffs. Having the Longhorns ranked as high as possible will only help the Aggies. It’s a must win game anyway.

Virginia at (8) Notre Dame

There’s an interesting dilemma that Texas A&M has with Notre Dame. Obviously, they are one of their two losses, and with them in front of them, the Irish could be one of the teams that potentially blocks them out of the playoff field. If the Fighting Irish lose to a team like Virginia, it will knock them out of the playoffs, but it will still be a quality win for Texas A&M. In the end, the easiest path to claiming a spot in the field is teams losing in front of you. Notre Dame obviously fits that basic criteria.
