Now that Ole Miss has beaten Georgia, Lane Kiffin has his rebels firmly in position to make the College Football Playoff. However, there are still some critical game results that could make their path a championship even more advantageous. There's still a path to the SEC Championship Game at stake. Ole Miss could still also secure a home playoff game in round one of the College Football Playoff too.
So, which team(s) do Ole Miss fans need to be rooting for and against heading into Week 12 action of college football if they want to position themselves to potentially host a playoff game and go on a national championship run?
Here are the top five games from this weekend that Ole Miss fans should keep their eye on as the Rebels look to win a championship in the first ever 12-Team College Football Playoff.
No. 7 Tennessee at No. 12 Georgia
Rooting Interest: Georgia destroys Tennessee
The only way that Ole Miss can get to the SEC Championship game is if Tennessee continues to lose. They have no head-to-head opportunity against them and will likely hold not an edge with any of the SEC tie-breakers (like record against common opponents or conference opponent records).
An emphatic Georgia victory could flat out knock Tennessee out of the bracket entirely, or at least push them below Ole Miss from a seeding perspective. The Rebels only need to move up three spots in the bracket to host a playoff game (11-seed this week).
No. 22 LSU vs Florida
Rooting Interest: Freshman QB phenom DJ Lagway crushes LSU
LSU actually still has a backdoor opportunity to make the SEC Championship game if every favorite wins down the stretch, followed by Arkansas defeating Missouri (it's a mess). LSU's hopes need to be destroyed. Florida's true freshman phenom quarterback is going to play this wek, so now it could really happen. DJ Lagway is a mobile quarterback and LSU can't stop that type of player to save their lives.
No. 9 BYU vs Kansas
Rooting Interest: Kansas' resurgence shocks BYU
The Kansas offense has been on fire recently as the Jayhawks have beaten Iowa State 45-36, they scored 27 against 16th ranked Kansas State, and put up 42 against Houston. This might sound like too wild of an upset, but BYU is barely favored. The Cougars already almost lost to Utah last week. If BYU loses this would almost automatically ensure that only one team makes the playoff from the Big 12 Conference. Great news for Ole Miss' shot at a higher at-large seed.
No. 21 South Carolina vs No. 23 Missouri
Rooting Interest: Gamecocks eliminate Missouri
Missouri's only 500 to 1 outside shot at the SEC Championship game involves winning out, plus a concert of very specific losses around the conference. A South Carolina victory would eliminate Missouri and give Ole Miss an even stronger-looking win on their schedule. The Gamecocks have have been on fire lately, outscoring Texas A&M and Oklahoma 79-29 over their last two games combined.
No. 3 Texas at Arkansas
Rooting Interest: Texas wins close against Arkansas
This one requires understanding the depth of the strange tie-breaker situation in the SEC. In short though, Texas needs to keep beating everyone down the stretch. The easiest path to the SEC Championship Game and/or a higher at-large seed for Ole Miss involves rooting for Texas to win and Tennessee to lose. However, if Texas wins, Ole Miss fans don't want them to win too big. It would look nice if Ole Miss had a better win than the Longhorns against a surprisingly decent Arkansas team.
