The Kansas City Chiefs survived a big-time scare against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
The Chiefs were staring their first loss of the season right in the face as the Broncos lined up for a game-winning 35-yard field goal with one second left. However, Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal had other plans as he blocked the kick, securing a 16-14 win for Kansas City.
The Chiefs' defensive and special teams units bailed out a bad day from the offense. One of the main culprits for the offense's struggles was quarterback Patrick Mahomes. It's been a rough season for Mahomes, but he has typically played well when it matters the most. That really wasn't the case against the Broncos, as Mahomes missed multiple touchdown passes would have secured a much easier win for K.C.
Mahomes talked about his struggles with to reporters after the game, and gave credit where it was due for the Chiefs getting the win.
"Yeah, I think, more than anything, I was just sick after that last draft," Mahomes said. "I missed that touchdown throw that would have gave us a chance to make it where they had to score a touchdown. I put our defense in a bad situation. And I thought our defense stepped up in that second half and did a great job. And so, I was just happy that we ended with the game with a block (field goal) and Leo (Chenal) got through there, and it was just joy after that."
It wasn't a horrible day for Mahomes statistically as he threw for 266 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. However, early in the fourth quarter he missed receiver Xavier Worthy, who had his man burnt deep down the sidelines, for what would have been a walk-in touchdown, leading to a Chiefs punt.
Late in the fourth, Mahomes threw an errand pass to tight end Travis Kelce, who was open in the endzone, forcing K.C. to settle for a field goal. Those two mistakes by Mahomes cost the Chiefs 11 points. To his defense, he was under duress for most of the day, thanks mostly to rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia, who played a chunk of the game in relief for the injured Wanya Morris.
At the end of the day, Mahomes has proved time and time again that he will come through in the clutch much more often than not. Teams are now in the grind of the season and there's going to be some sloppy play. The bigger concern for the Chiefs is their offensive line, which they'll have to find a way to fix in-house now that the trade deadline has passed.
