The NFL is a business, and it can get cold. With the preseason now over, the Las Vegas Raiders, and every other NFL team, will have to make some tough decisions that can impact players' lives. They have to cut their roster down from 90 to 53 players, which must happen quickly.
So, oftentimes, coaches and general managers will use the technique of not building relationships too much with those bubble roster players, that way it's easier to cut them. Obviously, after a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and technically to the San Francisco 49ers, the Raiders are forced with trying to make some difficult decisions involving their roster.
But even with those losses, the Raiders kind of have an idea of who they will keep, because some players played very well even in unfortunate circumstances. Guys like Tyreik McAllister made the roster purely off on what happened in their last game.
Now, the Raiders have some tough decisions to make.
"Yeah, Tom [Telesco, General Manager] and I are going to sit there and pound some tape away, brainstorm, put some names up there, and just look at it," Pierce said after tying with the San Francisco 49ers. "It's tough. It's not easy cutting 37 men and telling them they have to find somewhere else to play or whatever it may be. Nature of the beast, and we'll evaluate over the next 48 hours."
The preseason was crucial for players fighting for roster spots, with the final cuts deadline approaching. McAllister's performance, along with others, will influence the Raiders' decisions on who makes the final 53-man roster. This preseason finale was not just about the result but about individual performances that could sway coaching decisions as the Raiders prepare for the regular season. The tie against the 49ers provided valuable insights into player readiness and team dynamics under game conditions.
We will know soon how the final roster looks. Based on my predictions, the roster should be much more improved than it was last season.
