Michigan's Big Ten worst offense on pace to break all the wrong records after horrific loss to Texas

Despite a 30-10 victory against Fresno State in Week 1, Michigan's offense looked absolutely abysmal throughout the opening game of the 2024 college football season. In fact, they were the Big Ten's worst offense on a yards per play basis, barely eclipsing 4.4 yards per offensive snap. That was good enough to rank them 108th among FBS programs through Week 1.
It was clear that the Wolverines were going to have to see Davis Warren, the offensive line, and the Michigan playmakers take a massive step forward if they were going to compete toe to toe against the Texas Longhorns, even at home.
Who would step up? Would the offensive line gel and improve in run blocking? Would Donovan Edwards get his act together and look like the College Football 25 video game cover athlete? Which receiver would step up alongside Colston Loveland?
Unfortunately, for the vast majority of the game against Texas exactly zero players stepped up outside of Colston Loveland, and even he blew it with a fumble. The offensive line play was still a mess in the run game as the team failed to average even four yards per carry. Donovan Edwards did show some promise on a few of his carries, but it was simply not enough.
Davis Warren threw two interceptions on the day despite never even really trying to push the ball downfield at all. Gadget wide receiver Semaj Morgan did try to step up late in the game as he scored a junk-time touchdown reaching over the goal line as he was being dragged out of bounds. But outside of his contributions late Michigan still looked like the worst offense in the Big Ten.
Now Michigan is officially on pace to set modern era program records, but not the kind you want to see.
They could seriously post the lowest yards per play in 21st century program history as they're still well below five yards per offensive snap. The team is also on pace to post their worst rushing attack in terms of yards per game, yards per carry, and for the nerds out there rushing EPA in over a decade.
After turning the ball over three times to Texas' zero turnovers they're also on pace for the worst turnover margin Michigan has put up in the last 20+ years too. The Michigan offense is truly on pace to be historically bad unless something changes.
So what now?
Hopefully Sherrone Moore will realize that Davis Warren's 3.9 adjusted yards per pass attempt isn't going to cut it and he gives Alex Orji a try. Warren will now most likely rank dead last among all power conference passers in efficiency through the air. It's time for a change. If a quarterback change doesn't happen Michigan might as well pack it in already.
Beyond the quarterback situation, one more situation to monitor will be the offensive line. The run blocking is a capital "P" problem at this point through two weeks. We'll be keeping an eye out here at A to Z Sports on practice reports in that regards to that as well. There's not going to be a quick fix for this mess, but it's still early on in the year. If changes are made, the Wolverines could potentially bounce back strong.
