It's been a year of pulling out and checking the program record books so far for the Tennessee Vols – on both offense and defense. That continued on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium where the Vols blew away Kent State 71-0.
Tennessee set a number of program records on offense. 71 points is the most in modern era (since 1937) in program history. 740 total yards was also a program record, the second time this year Tennessee eclipsed 700 yards (718 vs. Chattanooga). Tennessee's 37 points in the first quarter set a program record for points in a quarter.
And along the way, RB Dylan Sampson has looked the part of a star. As such, it's fitting that his current run matches one of Tennessee's best to ever do it: Alvin Kamara.
According to Tennessee Athletics, Sampson matched Kamara for three straight games of multiple rushing touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, totaling 101 yards on 13 carries with 4 touchdowns. That comes after outings of 124 yards and 3 touchdowns and 132 yards and 2 touchdowns against Chattanooga and NC State, respectively.
Oh, and Sampson's four scores on Saturday tied six other players for the modern era record of rushing scores in a game. Not too bad.
Kamara also managed to rip off three straight games with multiple rushing scores during his breakout 2016 season for Tennessee. Kamara rushed for two scores in each of Tennessee's games against Kentucky, Missouri, and Vanderbilt to close out the 2016 regular season.
Josh Heupel loves to rotate his running backs, giving multiple players plenty of work. As such, it's not always easy to roll up big stats and put up record-setting numbers. But this season, Tennessee players haven't needed all that much opportunity to shine, particularly in the backfield. Fellow RB DeSean Bishop ripped off a 53-yard touchdown on Saturday and is beginning to emerge as a legitimate big play threat for the offense to go with Sampson.
It's been a great start to 2024 for Tennessee. Of course, any time you're matching Alvin Kamara on the football field, that's a pretty good sign for your offense going forward.
