Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Elijah Herring, who transferred to Memphis after the 2023 season, earned an impressive honor this week.
Herring was named the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the week after his strong performance in the Tigers' 38-17 win against Troy.
The former Vol, who is from Murfreesboro, TN, totaled eight tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack this past weekend.
Herring led the Volunteers in tackles last season (80 total tackles) while filling in for Keenan Pili, who missed all but one game due to injury.
With Pili returning in 2024 (plus the emergence of players like Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander), Herring was going to be pushed down Tennessee's depth chart. That's the main reason Herring transferred to Memphis (Herring's younger brother, Caleb, is still at Tennessee).
Memphis has a chance to reach the 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024 if they can win the AAC. There's a realistic scenario where Herring could face his old teammates in post-season play if the Vols and the Tigers can both make the playoff.

Great moment for the Vols
