Nico Iamaleava

Former Oklahoma Sooners assistant coach Cale Gundy, who spent over 20 years in Norman as an assistant, joined 104.5 The Zone's 3HL on Wednesday and he made quite the statement about Tennessee Vols redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

Gundy, who was a member of the 2000 Oklahoma staff that won a national championship behind the play of current Vols head coach Josh Heupel, told 3HL that he thinks Iamaleava has No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick type potential.

"I'm a huge fan of Nico," said Gundy. "I've watched him. Nico is a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, potentially, if he stays healthy. Nico is not only a first round draft (pick) QB, he could potentially be the first player taken in the draft if he stays healthy."

Gundy isn't wrong — No. 1 overall draft pick/Heisman Trophy winner is certainly the ceiling for Iamaleava. But while that potential is there, Iamaleava still has to go prove it against quality competition. And he'll have a huge chance to prove it on the road this weekend in Norman against the Sooners.

Tennessee and Oklahoma will kick off at 7:30 PM ET on Saturday night in front of what should be a raucous crowd.
