Jalen Hurts has looked like an MVP candidate for most of the season.
Just don't ask former Eagles general manager Joe Banner to vote on the award. He says he wouldn't vote for Hurts. Nonetheless, Banner revealed a critical prediction regarding Hurts' pending contract extension in the near future on The 33rd Team. What he had to say was a bit head-scratching.
"Although I wouldn’t vote for Jalen Hurts for NFL MVP, this season is pretty stunning for a guy in his third year in the league.…," he said. "Arizona’s Kyler Murray has $46.1 million average annual value, and I don’t care if you’re watching tape or going by statistics, there is a very strong case Hurts should be paid more than Murray.”
When Hurts' contract comes into play
Banner suggests that Hurts’ agent should let Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Tua Tagovailoa get their deals done first, as they are likely to sign larger deals than Murray. Banner also suggests Hurts should look for a three-year deal. The 24-year-old will be a free agent in 2024.
Banner's suggestions offer some perspective. But it's hard to believe he doesn't feel as though Hurts should be the league MVP. He's the quarterback on a team that is 12-1.
If not Hurts — who?
Hurts has shown the complete package as a quarterback. Of late, he's been getting it done with the deep ball.
Early in the season, he was getting it done on the ground.
The next level of progression, for Hurts, would be consistent accuracy. And in that department, he's already shown he's ahead of his expected learning curve.
It's known, after a season like this, Hurts will command a lot of money come 2024. The Eagles should pay him. His play deserves it. But more than anything else, he deserves to be the league MVP for this season, until proven otherwise.
