The Denver Broncos just fired Nathaniel Hackett. Broncos' fans are rejoicing right now.
His one season as head coach has been an absolute disaster. The offense is one of the worst in the league. There's tension around the team after the struggles.
Regardless, the Broncos are moving on.
They now have a massive decision ahead of them for this off-season. A lot of folks are discussing former New Orleans Saints' HC Sean Payton as an option.
That doesn't seem too likely, though.
The Broncos have a tough situation at quarterback. Russell Wilson has not played well this season, and he's quite expensive.
Payton will probably prefer a job where he can either choose a young quarterback or has a proven starter that can win now. Accordingly, it would make sense if he would have tons of interest in a job with the Dallas Cowboys or Los Angeles Chargers.
Those two teams have top quarterbacks in Justin Herbert and Dak Prescott.
Both teams also have plenty of skill position talent on both sides of the ball, too.
For Denver, they have an elite defense. Their offensive line is questionable.
We don't know how Russell Wilson will look in a new system next season and beyond. His performances this year haven't instilled confidence in the Broncos or their fans.
Sean Payton had Drew Brees for over a decade.
At his age, it's hard to see him settling for a team in a middling quarterback situation. Furthermore, he may want flexibility at that position as well as others on offense. Denver doesn't really do that.
The Broncos have limited cap space in the short term, and their draft capital isn't anything to write home about after making the deal for Wilson.
Broncos' fans need to prepare for the team to go in a different direction than Sean Payton.
