I think we all probably know by now that Colt McCoy will be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday against the Denver Broncos. The news of Kyler Murray tearing his ACL broke last week, and it will hold him out for the rest of the season.
While we never want to see any player get hurt, this is an advantage for the Broncos. They get to go up against the backup quarterback in Colt McCoy.
But, a lot of fans will hear backup and automatically think it will be easier. I mean, yeah, now Denver doesn't have to deal with Murray running around, but McCoy can still beat the Broncos.
There is a reason he has been a backup in this league for so long. When he does need to come in, he gets the job done. It may not look pretty sometimes, but he does what he has to do.
“Very high," said Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury when asked about his confidence level with McCoy.
"Yesterday he had some tough breaks. I think with a week of preparation (where) he gets the reps and he’s really confident that’s when he’s played at a high level. It’s not easy to come in on the third play of the game and then try to execute like that, but I thought he gave us a chance. We just weren’t able to make some plays there and in some critical situations.”
McCoy has started 35 games in his career, so it won't be like they have a guy coming in that has no idea what he is doing. McCoy knows how to run the offense, even if he looked a bit bad last week when he came in for Murray.
Obviously, Kingsbury isn't going to tell everyone he isn't confident in his backup quarterback, but he sounded like he was genuinely confident when he answered.
The Broncos will have an increased chance at winning, yes, but McCoy can sling the rock. He has 34 touchdowns in his career. Even then, the Cardinals still have a great supporting cast around him in a dynamic running game with James Connor, and of course DeAndre Hopkins on the outside.
The Cardinals also have some great pieces on defense. I know Broncos fans weren't really expecting to win, but some may now think it could be an easy win. Well, that just isn't the case.
