It feels like a decade ago that Carson Wentz last played quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. For Wentz, his journey since leaving Philly has already been tumultuous, but that somehow worsened on Monday.
Wentz’s Washington Commanders (1-4) are coming off a heart-breaking 21-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. It was Wentz who threw the game-losing interception from the Titans’ two-yard-line with six seconds remaining.
Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera has endured plenty of trials and tribulations at the helm of the NFL’s most incompetent franchise, but it seems like Wentz finally drove him past his breaking point.
When asked why the rest of the NFC East is so far ahead of his Commanders, Rivera spoke his truth.
“Quarterback.”
Rivera didn’t need a long-winded response to explain his team’s deficiencies. One word, and on to the next question.
That might not be fair to Wentz as the Cowboys are having no trouble with QB Cooper Rush leading the offense. Plus, the New York Giants and QB Daniel Jones have been getting right with the football gods to the tune of a 4-1 start.
It's important to note that the Commanders went out of their way to trade for Wentz this offseason, which makes this response from Rivera look like he's using his quarterback as the scapegoat.
Nevertheless, this blunt response from Rivera, whose days are also likely numbered in Washington, is enough to help Eagles fans crack a smile. Not that the fanbase doesn’t already have plenty to be happy about.
