The Kansas City Chiefs recently picked up a new weapon for their defense, and he could be on display this Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
The Chiefs signed former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Brandon Williams to the practice squad, then he was elevated to the 53-man roster just a few days before the game.
With Taylor Stallworth gone, Danny Shelton on the practice squad, and Derrick Nnadi not pulling his own weight, the Chiefs need help stopping the run and plugging up gaps. Not to mention they need another big body next to Chris Jones that draws attention.
“Brandon (Williams) brings a lot of energy defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. "Him and (Defensive Line Coach) Joe (Cullen) know each other really well from their Baltimore years. I was actually with Brandon his rookie year in Baltimore, so I knew him as a rookie. They change quite a bit from their first year in the league to (now) and that’s interesting.
"I’ve had other guys that I’ve had young and then years go by and then I’m with them again and they’re just different people. But listen, he’s a big, strong guy. We’ll see where we’re at. I mean it’s only been two days. Yesterday we didn’t even have helmets on. So, it’s going to take a little while to kind of sift through.”
Williams is 6'1" and 336 pounds, so it's fair to say he can fill some gaps in the run game. He doesn't have the numbers you would like from a guy who has started 114 games of 123 possible, but when you see the tape, it's there.
Williams won't fill the stats sheet up. Instead, he gets attention drawn to him because of his size. He is a veteran that knows a bit of this defense from his days with Spagnuolo in Baltimore.
Williams was with the Ravens from 2013-2021, in which Spagnuolo was a senior defensive assistant for the Ravens in 2013 and 2014.
This guy could be a weapon for the Chiefs that they never knew they needed. I know we say this about every new signee, but Williams has all the tools to help free up some other guys on the defensive line like Chris Jones.
It will be interesting to see how he does on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
