Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides latest injury update on RG Trey Smith ahead of preseason Week 3 vs. Seattle Seahawks
Kansas City Chiefs starting RG Trey Smith is expected to return to practice ahead of preseason Week 3 vs. the Seattle Seahawks. Smith has dealt with a hip injury in recent weeks.
The Kansas City Chiefs are back at 1 Arrowhead Drive for a “normal” practice week ahead of preseason Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid kicked off his presser with an injury update, just as he would on a regular-season Wednesday practice. The team is missing nine players as the practice week gets underway on Monday.
“As far as the injuries go, for today’s practice, (Jeff) Caldwell will be out of today’s practice. (Jack) Cochrane is doing better with the knee, but he’ll be out. Chamarri (Conner) will be out. He’s getting better. (Ashton) Gillotte won’t practice today. (Alohi) Gilman won’t practice. He had that lower back spasm in warm-ups. C.J. Hanson won’t practice. Jimmy Holiday won’t practice. (Chris) Oladokun actually is in the concussion protocol, so he had symptoms the following day and yesterday, and so he’s in the protocol then. Josh Simmons, lower back, and then Tyreke Smith had the hamstring during the game. Other than that, everybody else will go ahead and practice.”
The only player with a new and undisclosed injury is C.J. Hansen. Other injuries either occurred at training camp or during the preseason Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
One name conveniently absent from this list is starting right guard Trey Smith, who has missed time with a hip injury.
Chiefs RG Trey Smith expected back at practice ahead of preseason Week 3
Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that Smith will return to practice this week. He has missed several weeks due to a hip injury. He saw a specialist, and the main thing for Smith was to let the injury heal.
“Trey (Smith) loves to play, but it was important that he let that thing heal up like he did,” Reid said. “And I think it’ll pay off for him down the road.”
Andy Reid isn’t making any promises on Smith’s availability for preseason Week 3. They’re going to take it slow and make sure he’s available when the games start to count.
“Well, we’ll see,” Reid said. “See how he does today. Ease him back in, but he wants to get out there and get going. Been killing him not to be out there, so he’s kind of wired that way.”
Smith’s availability, along with Josh Simmons’, could be directly tied to whether or not Patrick Mahomes sees the field in preseason Week 3. I’d expect the team to hold all three players out and continue to target a Week 1 return.
