The national media loves going all-in on Brittany Matthews, the fiancé of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Pretty much anytime Matthews is on camera doing….well, anything….it's a national story.

But when someone not named Brittany Matthews does anything remotely similar?

Crickets.

We got an example of that double standard on Saturday.

Remember in January when the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs and Matthews showered fans with champagne?

I saw that clip and just thought it was an organic moment of celebration. It wasn't a big deal.

The national media, however, went on a crusade against Matthews. There were scathing columns written about Matthews from numerous national media outlets.

On Saturday, we saw a similar moment from Auburn Tigers assistant coach Steven Pearl.

Pearl decided to spray folks in Moore's Mill restaurant in Auburn, AL with champagne to celebrate the Tigers' SEC regular-season championship.

So far, the national media doesn't seem interested in Pearl's champagne shower.

Obviously, what Pearl did is on a bit of a smaller scale. But I think most Chiefs fans know that if that had been Brittany Matthews standing on that table showering people with champagne, there would have already been a litany of articles about it. TMZ, the NY Post, they'd all be on it.

The truth is that Matthews is an easy target for the national media. So they ignore stuff like this from Pearl — because honestly, who cares on a national level what an Auburn assistant does — but they'll use it for two days worth of content if it's Matthews.

If that's not a double standard, then what is?
