Kansas City has a very important task ahead of them, and it's something the franchise does not take lightly. The Chiefs have been so good at developing talent through the draft over the last few years. We could even take this last year's draft class and use it as an example.
Creed Humphrey, the Chiefs starting center, was selected in the 2021 NFL draft and has already become one of the best centers, if not the best, in the league. Trey Smith, a sixth-round pick in 2021, has become an amazing offensive lineman for the Chiefs already. Honestly, we could keep going.
However, the Chiefs have a new draft class to focus on. Here are the three positions you can expect Kansas City to be interested in for the upcoming draft.
Chiefs need to target these certain positions in the upcoming draft, in no order of importance
A true third receiving option
Kansas City found out quickly in the 2021-2022 NFL season that teams were starting to figure them out. When they were 3-4, everyone was able to realize that they needed more options alongside Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. That is exactly what the Chiefs need to do in this upcoming draft. Should they spend their first pick on a receiver? Probably not. However, if they did, here are some guys that would be a good fit if available.
Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State
Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State
Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas
More pass rushers
This year the defense really hit a turnaround in the second half. While they were considered a top-half defense during that time, they still weren't getting to the quarterback as much as they'd like. The Chiefs had one sack against a Bengals team that may have the worst offensive line in playoff history, as they beat Tennessee by allowing nine sacks. While it could be possible the Chiefs take a pass rusher in the first round, here are some players that may be available, and would also be a good fit.
Travon Walker, Edge, Georgia
David Ojabo, Edge, Michigan
Jermaine Johnson, Edge, Florida State
Young corners, early in the draft preferably
The Chiefs have put this issue to the side for way too long now. In the past, they would be ranked one of the worst pass defenses in terms of coverage in the secondary. Instead of going in the draft, the Chiefs would either pick up free agents that weren't well known or sign undrafted rookies. I think it's time they finally do what needs to be done. The last year or two they drafted one corner that has panned out from a later round being L'Jarius Sneed. Here are some early guys they could target.
Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington
Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida
Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati
It may be safe to say that no matter what you think the right thing to do with this upcoming draft is, general manager Brett Veach will make the right decision for this team.
