The Tennessee Vols are doing the right thing by checking in with five-star running back Zachary Evans.

Tennessee assistant coach Brian Niedermeyer is reportedly set to visit Evans, who was recently released from his signed National Letter of Intent with Georgia, on Tuesday.

The extremely talented running back had some issues during high school, which included being suspended for the state championship game because he refused to turn in his cell phone the night before.

Evans was also suspended earlier during his senior season for three games.

There are definitely some concerning issues surrounding Evans (why would Kirby Smart let an elite player walk?), but the Vols are being smart by at least gauging the situation with their own eyes and ears. It's always better to find out what's going on from the source, instead of listening to rumor and innuendo.

For what it's worth, hall of famer Deion Sanders is in Evans' corner.

Tennessee actually has good depth at running back right now. But a player as talented as Evans isn't available often. Plus, if the Vols are able to land him, it means they likely keep him away from a SEC rival.

Evans was reportedly strongly considering Texas A&M. That's notable, since Aggies running backs coach Jay Graham is a candidate to replace David Johnson at Tennessee.

The Vols have some legitimate momentum right now, so it wouldn't surprise me if they become a major factor with Evans.

Tennessee's improved (and potentially dominant) offensive line, plus the potential addition of Graham, could be very enticing to Evans.

Of course, the Vols have to make sure they're comfortable with Evans and whatever actually happened at Georgia.

If they are, then they might be able to land another five-star recruit from the Bulldogs.
