The Tennessee Vols desperately need some help on the defensive side of the ball if the program is going to take a major step forward in 2022.
Fortunately for the Vols, they received some much-needed good news in that department on Sunday afternoon.
Georgia Tech transfer Wesley Walker, a defensive back from Nashville, TN, committed to Tennessee on Sunday.
Walker is a former three-star recruit who signed with the Yellow Jackets during the 2019 recruiting cycle. He totaled 95 tackles during three seasons at Georgia Tech. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining at UT.
Defensive back is one of the Vols' biggest positions of need — especially with Alontae Taylor and Theo Jackson moving on from the program after the 2021 season. Walker will instantly provide Tennessee with another starting-caliber option in the secondary.
As for the decision to commit to the Vols?
It sounds like it was an easy easy decision for Walker. He told VolQuest that he knows several current Vols — specifically Tyler Baron and Cooper Mays — thanks in part to his family's move to Knoxville a couple of years ago.
Walker also sensed authenticity from the Tennessee coaching staff.
"Sometimes when you are talking to coaches you can sense dishonesty or creating a picture that sounds great just to get you here, but that wasn't the case with them," said Walker to VolQuest.
The Vols still have more work to do in the transfer portal — there are still significant depth issues on the defensive side of the ball — but this is certainly a nice start to the spring for Tennessee.
