The Tennessee Vols have been loading up on 2021 commits in recent months.
Jeremy Pruitt and his staff have landed 11 commits since March 30, vaulting Tennessee's 2021 recruiting class to No. 2 in the nation (behind Ohio State).
The two centerpieces of UT's 2021 recruiting class are a pair of five-stars — linebacker Terrence Lewis and defensive end Dylan Brooks.
But one of the recent commits that fans should be most excited about is four-star safety Kamar Wilcoxson, who committed to Tennessee on April 27.
For the Vols to be successful in the SEC, they need some defensive backs with swagger. I'm talking about a Minkah Fitzpatrick or Tyrann Mathieu vibe. Players who have the confidence to play anywhere in the secondary. Players who bring an infectious energy to the field that fires up the rest of the team.
Wilcoxson can be that player for Tennessee — especially with Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley coaching him.
The Atlanta native, who plays high school football at IMG Academy in Florida, isn't short on confidence.
And confidence is one of the most needed attributes to be an elite safety in the SEC.
Wilcoxson recently toldThe Athletic's David Ubben that he plans to start as a true freshman at Tennessee. And if he doesn't, it's on him.
"Me being myself and knowing how hard I work, if I don’t start my freshman year, that’s something I need to blame on myself", said Wilcoxson.
Ubben pointed out that Wilcoxson's Twitter user name is simply a Saturn emoji.
Wilcoxson's response?
“I’m in a whole different world than everybody else."
Tennessee hasn't had that kind of swagger in the secondary in a long time. Maybe not since Eric Berry was in town over 10 years ago.
But this is the type of defensive back we can expect to see in Knoxville under Pruitt.
The combination of Pruitt/Ansley is going to have Tennessee's secondary performing at an elite level in the coming years. And players like Wilcoxson, who reportedly runs a 4.49 in the 40 yard dash, will be a big reason why.
Fans should be excited at the type of players Pruitt is bringing to Rocky Top. The Vols are going to look like a much different team than what we've grown accustomed to seeing on the field in recent years.
