The New Orleans Saints have an intriguing situation brewing this year.
They still have former head coach Sean Payton under contract. This season isn't going how they planned, and the Saints could use more draft capital going forward. Therefore, trading Payton makes plenty of sense, and it seems pretty likely.
A few teams have been mentioned in rumors over the past couple of months, especially the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers.
The Dallas Cowboys were at the forefront of discussions before the season, but their success could keep Mike McCarthy at the helm in Dallas.
Many teams will be interested in Payton, but who will the Saints trade him to after the season?
The Chargers seem like a likely candidate, but a potential postseason trip could hinder their ability to make a move for the future Hall of Fame HC.
The Chargers seem like the best fit.
They have a blossoming young quarterback in Justin Herbert. They have great offensive weapons. Los Angeles has a very talented defense on every level, too. A match with Payton makes all the sense in the world.
That being said, if the Chargers make a trip to the playoffs, can they really choose to move on from current HC Brandon Staley?
Some people would say yes, and some would say no. In order to maximize their offensive ceiling, hiring Payton would be their best move for the future in the long-term.
Although, the Saints could work out a deal with a team that does not see the postseason. Negotiations and talks will surely begin whenever teams begin to be eliminated, and the Saints won't be seeing the playoffs, either.
Things could get very interesting for Payton and the Saints.
The rest of the season for the Chargers could decide if the former Saints HC could make the move to LA.
