Once more, the Buffalo Bills are making some of their cuts early in the week.
This time, the cuts involve two players involved in critical roster battles. Per NFL Network, punter Matt Haack and wide receiver Tavon Austin have both been released from the team.
During the weekend, Haack's release appeared imminent as Araiza held every extra point attempt but got the rest in the single punt attempt. While many were confused when it was Haack who took the field for the punt from the 50-yard line, it was clear the Bills had seen all they needed to from the "Punt God."
As for Tavon Austin, his only path to the 53-man roster was to take over as the team's return specialist. With a deep group of wide receivers that can also seriously contribute on offense, that turned into a highly complicated task.
Specifically, it was Khalil Shakir's rise that made it evident Austin would be left looking for a spot like that famous John Travolta GIF. After the rookie's tremendous summer, the top of the Bills' depth chart at wide receiver currently looks like this:
- Stefon Diggs
- Gabe Davis
- Isaiah McKenzie
- Khalil Shakir
- Jamison Crowder
- Isaiah Hodgins
- Jake Kumerow
Austin had a solid offseason for Buffalo, but that's a significantly deep group of names. The Bills still have some decision-making to pull off at the position group though, so stay tuned for that.
