In what has been a hodge-podge start to the NBA season for the Dallas Mavericks (4-3), the one shining factor is Luka Doncic.
And after the Mavericks' Wednesday night 103-100 win over the Utah Jazz, history was crystallized. Doncic is the first player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1962-63 to record 30-plus points in the first seven games of the season.
Yes, you read that right.
After the game, Doncic almost couldn't fathom the company he resides in with the record.
“I always hear Wilt Chamberlain," Doncic said after the game. "He is always there. It is crazy. Obviously, I just want to play in the NBA. This is really a dream for me, and I couldn’t be happier to just play basketball and do my job. I am just happy to play basketball and when we win games it is even better.”
What is even more shocking is how Doncic is leading the league at 36.1 points per game while shooting 23 percent from 3-point range. He's in a groove offensively, but he can get even better.
“Maybe yes, maybe no," Doncic said when asked if he is in a groove on Wednesday. "I just know that I had to start better than last year because the way I started last year wasn’t acceptable. So, I tried to learn from that and just be better than last year.”
His teammate, Spencer Dinwiddie also couldn't help but gush about how well Doncic is playing.
“I mean, amazing, but I’m not surprised," Dinwiddie said. "So. like, you’ll see no reaction. I just said this on the radio, like – Luka is a savant, you know what I mean? In every sense of the word, as it applies to basketball. Nothing shocks me. Obviously, he’s young [and] the best is yet to come. I think he’s going to set a lot of different records for the Mavs and be in the conversation with the greats and be one of the best in the league for as long as he chooses to play this game, so it’s an honor to be able to play with a guy that talented.”
Being better is one thing — Doncic is doing more than that. His game is at another level, it's nearly indescribable. On Friday, he'll have his toughest test yet with the Toronto Raptors, who aim to limit his scoring.
We'll see if that is even a possibility at this point.
