For players like Deon Cain, the preseason is all about making the most out of the opportunities you’re given.
As players continue to jockey for the last few spots available on the Eagles’ 53-man roster, Cain improved his odds with an outstanding performance in Sunday’s exhibition against the Cleveland Browns.
Cain’s impressive outing included five catches on seven targets for 66 yards – all team highs. Two of his five catches were exactly what teams would hope to see from their starters.
The Eagles’ wide receiver room is one of the most talented groups the team has seen in recent history.
A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith, Zach Pascal, and Quez Watkins are locks to make Philadelphia’s active roster for the team’s Week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions.
Jalen Reagor likely figures in as the fifth receiver, but after being selected with the 21st pick in the 2020 draft he’s put together two disappointing seasons.
While general manager Howie Roseman and the team have more invested in Reagor, Cain is certainly gaining ground on him.
I’ve never been of the belief that teams should hold on to the guys selected highly in the draft simply because they were a better prospect coming out of college. Teams should prioritize players on who can help them most in the upcoming season – and most teams do that.
Cain is the clear-cut No. 6, if he isn’t in front of Reagor. Roseman and the team should feel confident from what Cain has shown this offseason, which could turn Reagor into a trade candidate.
Next week’s preseason finale is likely to provide more clarity on how the position group will shake out.
Though I presume Reagor has a slight lead on Cain, I’m admittedly curious to see how he can close the gap the next time out. However, I’m not envious of head coach Nick Sirianni, who will have an extremely difficult decision to make in a couple of weeks.
