Are the Pittsburgh Steelers going to extend wide receiver Diontae Johnson before the start of the 2022 season?

That's the biggest storyline surrounding Pittsburgh during training camp. And it's a storyline that became even more interesting with the news that star wide receiver DK Metcalf is signing a three-year extension with the Seattle Seahawks for $72 million.

Johnson is currently "holding in" at Pittsburgh's training camp. He's there, but he's not practicing as he awaits a new deal.

Highly respected NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, who has broken numerous stories over the years, said on Friday that he doesn't think a deal between Johnson and the Steelers is "imminent", but he thinks the deal will eventually get done.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't foresee Johnson sitting out the entire season — he can't afford to do that. But when does he end the hold in? When does he get to work and accept that it might be next offseason before a deal gets done?

I'm sure it's tough for Johnson to watch other wide receivers get mega-deals while he's still on his rookie deal after a breakout season. It's clear he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, but will he eventually get tired of waiting on a new deal and demand to be traded? I don't think that's how this turns out, but you can't rule it out after the craziness we've seen this offseason with wide receivers.
