The Kansas City Chiefs have been competing for the Super Bowl every year for the last four years and we will likely see a fifth this year. Even with how things have transpired the last few months, they are still one of the more championship-ready teams.
The receiver revamp after they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins left some national media outlets doubting the Chiefs as a competitor. A ton of people think the team is now worse without Hill, and very few people think the team is better, or even on the same level.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Chiefs are no longer the best team coming into the season, as they have been the last few years. In fact, they aren't even one of the three best teams, per their rankings.
Chiefs ranked fourth in PFF rankings
Pre-season rankings don't really hold any weight, at all. But, they are fun. In this case, it's fun to see how wrong the guys over at PFF could potentially be, as they ranked Kansas City the fourth-best team in the NFL, prior to the season, of course.
Or, they could be completely right, and the Chiefs be the fourth-best team in the NFL. They did technically finish in that spot last season, so it isn't far-fetched.
Here is what PFF's Sam Monson thinks of the Chiefs going into next year:
"With the rest of the NFL’s contenders in an arms race, the Chiefs chose to trade away one of the most potent weapons in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. They look to replace him not with any one player but in the aggregate with the Marquez Valdes-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Skyy Moore additions, and while that may be the best thing for the long-term cap health of the roster, it’s tough to argue that the Chiefs won’t take a small step backward initially. Nonetheless, as long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback, the Chiefs will be amongst the real contenders."
Above the Chiefs are as followed:
- Buffalo Bills
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Los Angeles Rams
Some may think that ranking Kansas City fourth is generous. In my opinion, they should be higher, and here's why.
The Chiefs have one of the most balanced, and complete teams they have had, maybe ever, definitely in recent memory. The offense was always there and will likely be there as long as Patrick Mahomes leads the team.
However, the defense is maybe the best it has been over the last four years. Obviously, we haven't seen it yet, but on paper, it's everything it hasn't been since 2018. Not to mention, the coaching staff got even better with Matt Nagy as the quarterback coach.
The only things standing in the Chiefs way are their schedule, which may be one of the hardest in the league, and themselves. Last season they beat themselves more than their opponents beat them.
