Former Kansas City Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy started some drama this week when he trashed KC offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy in a podcast interview.
"There's a reason why every year they hype him up to get a job and then when the time comes, nobody hires him because they know the type of coach he really is," said McCoy in an interview on the I Am Athlete podcast.
McCoy, who played for Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles for four seasons, spent one season with Reid and Bieniemy in Kansas City (the 2019 season).
On Thursday, Reid addressed McCoy's comments after Kansas City's OTA session. And he didn't hold back (though, in typical Reid fashion, he was polite about it).
Reid told reporters that Bieniemy can be hard on veteran players, but he noted that McCoy was on the downside of his career during his time with the Chiefs, and "that can be hard to hear".
Reid essentially said that McCoy was washed at that point in his career — without using those words.
McCoy played in 13 games for Kansas City in 2019, totaling 465 rushing yards and 181 receiving yards. He finished the season with five touchdowns (four rushing and one receiving).
After the 2019 season, McCoy signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Things didn't go well for McCoy in Tampa as the six-time Pro-Bowler rushed for only 31 yards and caught just 15 passes for 101 yards while scoring zero touchdowns.
It sounds like McCoy was bitter about the way his career came to an end. He wasn't the same dominant player that he was with the Eagles or the Buffalo Bills. Other players, like quarterback Patrick Mahomes, don't seem to have any issues with Bieniemy so I wouldn't put too much stock into the former running back's comments. If Bieniemy was a problem, he wouldn't still be on Reid's coaching staff.
