Most of the offseason chatter surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs has centered on bringing back safety Tyrann Mathieu in 2022 or extensions for offensive tackle Orlando Brown and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
But there are other moves the Chiefs need to make. For example, they need to address the running back position. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is currently RB1 in Kansas City and he has some obvious durability issues.
ESPN had a brilliant suggestion for the Chiefs this week that could bolster the running back position without costing too much money.
They suggested that Kansas City should pursue free agent running back/wide receiver/return Cordarrelle Patterson.

Cordarrelle Patterson is a free agent yet again: Imagine what he could do as a rusher/receiver/returner against opponents that cannot afford to focus on him.
I love this idea for KC. Patterson, who turns 31 later this month, proved in 2021 that he can be a dangerous player in the NFL. The former Tennessee Vols wide receiver had 618 rushing yards last season to go along with 52 receptions for 548 yards.
The Atlanta Falcons figured out that Patterson can effectively be used as a hybrid running back/wide receiver that can cause huge matchup problems for opposing defenses. His ability to make defenders miss in the open field is elite. And I absolutely think he could be a big weapon for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Spotrac is projecting Patterson to get a two-year deal worth $13 million. I think that's a reasonable amount to spend to address the running back position without going all-in on a player like Saquon Barkley who would come with plenty of question marks.
