When the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to select Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, it was a decision that was met with skepticism.

Mahomes was viewed by many analysts as a second-round pick before shooting up draft boards during the pre-draft process.

The main reason there were questions surrounding Mahomes was because he played in an Air Raid offense at Texas Tech. Those types of offenses don't typically produce Pro-Bowl caliber quarterbacks.

For that reason, there were some Chiefs fans who weren't exactly pleased with the selection of Mahomes.

On Thursday, NFL Network relived a few of those responses.

"You want a QB to groom, take [Josh] Dobbs from [Tennessee]…what a waste to move up for Mahomes," read one tweet.

"This guy sucks gonna be a bust," read another tweet.

I imagine those Chiefs fans feel much differently today than they did in 2017.

While those tweets ended up being terrible takes, I don't think we should give those fans too much grief. Evaluating the quarterback position is one of the toughest things to do in sports. We see NFL franchises spend significant draft capital on quarterbacks all the time and those quarterbacks often end up not panning out.

The questions surrounding Mahomes were legitimate. Mahomes, however, is a special player who was able to deliver on the upside that Kansas City saw in him during the draft process.
