The New Orleans Saints have been trying to figure out their depth at wide receiver and running back. Could one player do both? That would be Kirk Merritt. He is listed at wide receiver, but he has spent some time with the running backs during camp. During the preseason, he has been one of the most impressive players for the Saints.
Merritt also provides special teams reps. He has a well-balanced game. He's made a handful of impressive plays on offense a couple of nice plays on special teams so far during the preseason. He had a touchdown in tonight's final preseason game as well.
He deserves an opportunity on the roster, especially since the Saints need consistency from the lower half of their offensive depth chart. Not to mention, impact plays on special teams can make a huge difference.
Merritt won't put up the numbers that a WR like Jarvis Landry or Chris Olave will, but his presence cannot be understated. Keeping him on the roster to bolster multiple positions as well as the return game would make the most sense for the Saints.
It'll be interesting to see if the Saints choose to put him on the active roster for Week 1. There is bro doubt that Merritt deserves it, though. His versatility could provide a lot of value to the Saints.
