At one point, it was thought the Kansas City Chiefs and Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. would reach an agreement on a long-term deal before the franchise tag deadline on July 15.
But as of Tuesday, that doesn't seem too likely.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs and Brown Jr. are unlikely to strike a deal before July 15. And, as a result, Brown Jr. could miss training camp and even as much as the first week of the season.
Garafolo appeared on the most recent episode of NFL Total Access and dished the unfortunate news.
"I spoke to Jamaal Brown, the former NFL offensive tackle who is serving as a mentor for Orlando, and he said the sides are nowhere close on a deal," said Garafolo. "And that they are not going to "do a deal just to do a deal".
"Now, Jamaal Brown did not get into specifics, but my understanding is that the offers to Brown Jr. -who wants to be paid at the top of the left tackle market, which is $23 million per year- are more in line with the top of the right tackle market."
Brown Jr. was traded to the Chiefs because he wanted to play left tackle in the NFL, so it's kind of a diss from the Chiefs to price him as a right tackle. Especially considering Brown Jr. made the Pro Bowl as a left tackle.
Brown Jr. said back in June that "it's not a good year to go into the season with a backup left tackle" and so far, it sounds like he is going to go through with that warning.
Stay tuned.
