The Kansas City Chiefs will lose a veteran defensive assistant to retirement during the 2024 NFL offseason.

Speaking to local beat reporters shortly after his podium session at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Chiefs HC Andy Reid was asked about changes to his coaching staff. As of right now, there is only one change to announce.

Chiefs OLB coach Ken Flajole has "hung up the whistle" after spending the last 25 years as a coach in the NFL. Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick was among those to report the news of Flajole's retirement.

Flajole joined the Chiefs in April of 2021 as the team's OLB coach, having coached every position on the defensive side of the ball during his college and NFL coaching career. Like Andy Reid, Flajole got his NFL start with the Green Bay Packers, which is where the two coaches first crossed paths.

In 2009, Flajole became the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, where he worked under Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He even joined Doug Pederson's Eagles coaching staff back in 2016. There were a lot of threads that led him to Kansas City. Now, after back-to-back Super Bowl wins, Flajole is hanging it up.

Potential replacement options for the Chiefs

The Chiefs have not yet made a move to replace Flajole. It's possible that Brendan Daly could overtake some of his responsibilities as the team's inside linebackers coach. It's also possible that a defensive quality control coach, such as Alex Whittingham, could be promoted internally. Whittingham has worked closely with the linebacker room over the past two seasons.
