ESPN says a second year Tennessee Vols player is among those in college football with the "most to prove" in college football in 2024.
Vols redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava was listed this week among ESPN's five players with the most to prove this fall.
Iamaleava will serve as Tennessee's starting quarterback in 2024 after making one start (in the Citrus Bowl against Iowa) as a true freshman.
From ESPN: The good news for Iamaleava is that he certainly appears to have all the tools to be a difference-maker at quarterback and accounted for four touchdowns in his first start last season in Tennessee's 35-0 victory over Iowa in the Citrus Bowl. But from the time Iamaleava signed with the Vols, he's been under a bright spotlight — from the reported $8 million NIL deal he signed, to being hailed as the quarterback that would vault the Vols back into championship contention, to being at the center of the recent NCAA investigation into Tennessee's program. No player since Peyton Manning has walked onto Tennessee's campus with this much pressure to perform at an elite level.
After a couple of years of waiting for the Nico era to arrive, it's finally here. And the former five-star recruit will immediately be faced with high expectations. The Vols are hoping to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024. And Nico is already receiving plenty of Heisman hype.
Iamaleava is still a young player with a lot of learning to do in his first season as a stater, but thanks to a lucrative NIL deal and a five-star recruiting ranking, he'll be under the microscope in 2024 as he looks to deliver a special season for the Vols.
That's a lot to put on a young player's shoulders, but Nico, so far, appears more than capable of handling (and reaching) the high expectations.
