Kalen DeBoer just took over as the Alabama Crimson Tide's new head coach a month ago and he's already having to replace his offensive coordinator.
News broke late Friday night that Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama, is leaving Tuscaloosa to become the Seattle Seahawks' new offensive coordinator.
Grubb is the latest college coach to make a break for the NFL amid the growing workload for colleges coaches due to the NCAA transfer portal/NIL era.
ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported early Saturday morning that Alabama will likely promote tight ends coach Nick Sheridan and wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard to co-offensive coordinators.
Rittenberg also noted that Sheridan could be the primary playcaller for the Crimson Tide while also moving to quarterbacks coach (the position that Grubb was set to coach).
Sheridan was on staff with DeBoer at Indiana in 2019 and at Washington in 2022 and 2023.
From 2014 to 2016, Sheridan was a graduate assistant for the Tennessee Vols under Butch Jones.
In 2015 and 2016, Sheridan was essentially the Vols' quarterbacks coach. Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord officially held the quarterbacks coach title, but it was Sheridan that was primarily working with then Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs.
“Of course we had a lot of great coaches there, but to be able to work with Coach Sheridan on a daily basis, I owe a lot of my success to him and the relationship that we had,” said Dobbs in 2020 while acknowledging that Sheridan was in charge of quarterbacks at Tennessee during his time in Knoxville.
Sheridan called plays at Indiana in 2019, but this will be his first time calling plays in the SEC (if he's promoted as Rittenberg expects). His previous experience as a graduate assistant/de facto quarterbacks coach at Tennessee will help, but it'll still be a brand new world for Sheridan.
49ers WR Jauan Jennings still drives the same car he drove as a college student at Tennessee
Sounds very Jauan Jennings-like
