The San Francisco 49ers' most concerted challenge in the NFC West next season may come from the Los Angeles Rams and, when they renew their rivalry, quarterback Brock Purdy will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline.

Los Angeles is hiring Iowa State offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase as its new passing game coordinator, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

Scheelhaase had been on the Iowa State staff since 2018, Purdy's first season with the Cyclones.

He was the running backs coach in the first season, but did spend the next two years as the wide receivers coach, serving in that role in 2020, when Purdy led Iowa State to a Fiesta Bowl win over Oregon.

Scheelhaase added running backs coach and run game coordinator duties to his work as the receivers coach in 2021, Purdy's final season, before ascending to offensive coordinator in 2023.

Purdy and Scheelhaase may not have worked together directly, but there will be a reunion between the two when the 49ers face the Rams next season, with their two divisional matchups set to be a battle for supremacy between two former Cyclones.
