The Texans Longhorns have a handful of incredible NFL prospects set to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. It's no surprise when two, maybe even three of them find their way into round one of an NFL Mock Draft. But Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema made a shocking selection for the Las Vegas Raiders at pick 13 overall in his latest mock draft.
Byron Murphy II, DL Texas
In Sikkema's explanation of the pick he wrote, "With no good quarterback option here, look for the Raiders to go defense…Murphy is the total package — youth, length, strength and speed."
Over the past several weeks Byron Murphy has been rising up NFL Mock Draft boards left and right. I talked to several NFL scouts and media members at the Senior Bowl who have Murphy ranked as their top overall defensive lineman in this draft class. He's clearly one of the best defensive players in this draft. But is he worth pick 13 overall?
His game tape against Iowa State (among many other things) certainly would seem to suggest he just might be worth that early selection (some of his best plays in that game are featured in the post below).
Murphy displays all the right traits you want in a top playmaking defensive line prospect and I myself actually have him rated as my 14th overall prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft class.
Murphy posted the highest pass rush pressure rate in 2023 among all defensive line prospects in this class by a wide margin thanks to his deadly combination of speed, size, and technical abilities.
Pick 13 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft may seem unbelievably high right now for a player that many didn't believe would be a first round pick just a few short months ago, but Murphy's hype is building. Don't expect that to change any time soon.
